Movement for Every Body

I’m Dr. Heather Katz, and I’m passionate about accessible, fun, adapted group exercise! I have a
background in adapted physical education and activity, with five years working in public schools.
I have a PhD in kinesiology, with my dissertation focused on adapted group exercise.

I love all group ex formats, but dance is my first love! I’ve been teaching some form of dance fitness since 2012, and developed my own adapted format that I can’t wait to share with you all. I’ve also taught aqua fitness, functional training for older adults, bootcamp-style classes, and stretching and balance for older adults. I’m here to help you find joy in teaching accessible classes — no matter what format you teach!

This is a dance fitness format that emphasizes accessibility and inclusion by providing modifications, accommodations, and evidence-based strategies for engagement.

Will I be a licensed/certified instructor after I complete the workshop?

Right now, Ability in Motion doesn’t offer a license, but you will receive AFAA/NASM CEUs and a certificate of completion. A license/certification is in the works, and once it’s developed, you will be grandfathered in.

What will I receive with a membership?

Access to message boards with other members, a 30-minute consult session with Heather, special education events only available to members, and resources to help with teaching and choreography.

What does a consult session consist of?

This is based on your needs! Heather can create choreography tailored for your class, problem solve any issues with teaching, offer advocacy resources, help with promoting your class, and offer teaching strategies and resources for different populations. Whatever your needs are as an adapted fitness instructor, Heather has you covered!

Do I have to teach dance fitness to utilize the services of Ability in Motion?

No! Right now, Adapted Dance Fitness is the only workshop offered, but Heather has 14 years of experience as a group fitness instructor across many formats, 5 years as an adapted physical education teacher, and is currently a postdoc working with older adults in fitness settings. She has a varied background and can offer strategies for most formats!
